Bruises – Kiyoshi x Reader

-----------

You couldn’t believe what you were seeing. Why would he continue to play even with his injuries? You were watching Seirin play against Kirisaki Daīchi High for the second time for a spot in the Winter Cup and you were almost in tears. You were currently sitting beside your classmate and friend Ryota Kise, and the two of you were cheering for Seirin High. What he didn’t know, however, was that you were dating the center, Kiyoshi Teppei.

It had started after the interhigh preliminaries when you were watching your grade school friend, Kuroko, playing in the Winter Cup preliminaries. You had gone to congratulate the team while Kaijo got ready to play. You smiled when Kiyoshi patted Kuroko’s back a little too forcefully and the two of you ended up laughing about it later on over milkshakes when you had asked Kuroko about the new player.

After that, you, and sometimes Kise, had been attending Seirin’s matches, watching them play as you began to get closer to their center. Eventually the tall, ever cheerful male had asked you out to dinner and that was your relationship began to bloom. Now however, you were worried about his wellbeing and his safety as you watched the match.

“T-Teppei…” you sniffed as Ryota wrapped an arm around you, your shoulders shaking as you turned your head away when the male’s elbow from Kirisaki Daīchi connected with Kiyoshi’s face. You couldn’t help it. You loved him after all and he had promised you he’d be careful. You watched as the referee called a time out just as Kiyoshi shakily got back up, shouting that he would protect Seirin and their basketball as you watched in horror at how broken he looked.

“He’ll be okay.” Kise reassured you from your side as he hugged you, you turning to bury your face in the crook of his neck, sobbing quietly.

“H-He’s got s-so many i-injuries!” you sobbed brokenly. “H-He promised Ryota! He p-promised he w-wouldn’t get hurt!” you began to sniffle, pulling away as you swiped at the tears with your hand, watching the end of the game. Seirin had won, beating Kirisaki Daīchi High 76-70. You had witnessed the rest of the game, including Kiyoshi being subbed out and watching as he smiled when his team had won. He seemed so happy even though he was hurt so badly.

“See (Name)-cchi! They won! I bet the next time you see him he’ll be better than before!” he grinned as he stood, telling you he had to find the rest of the Kaijo team before their match as he walked off. Standing up in a daze you began to walk towards the stairs, immediately breaking into a run when you knew no one was looking. You had tears freely falling as you launched yourself into the arms of your surprised boyfriend, especially after his team was around and he knew how you felt about either team knowing of your relationship. After keeping it a secret for so long, you had decided to tell at least someone, confiding in Kise’s old friend Kuroko after treating him to milkshakes, and finding out you actually found the team friendly and upbeat.

“You promised…” You sobbed brokenly into his bruised chest as he smiled weakly.

“I know…Gomen (Name). I was trying to be careful but I had to protect my friends.” He smiled, smoothing down your hair after your run comfortingly as you looked up at him.

“What if he had put you in the hospital again? What then Kiyoshi! I couldn’t stand…I can’t…I mean you…” You could no longer put your thoughts into words, simply sobbing heavily, feeling guilty about being the one crying even though he was the one who was hurt. It hurt you greatly knowing he could have been seriously injured, or worse, killed. You knew, after all, that Makoto Hanamiya was never one who played fairly. Thinking back, he had never been the nicest in grade school either, so you didn’t know why you were surprised.

“Speaking of the hospital,” Riko cut in with an authoritative tone. “You need to go see a doctor. I’m not letting you play until you get those injuries checked by a professional.” She told him firmly as Kiyoshi simply chuckled a bit and nodded, turning to you with pleading brown eyes.

“You’ll come with me right, (Name)?” He asked with a small smile as you nodded slowly.

“Yeah…A-At least to make sure you don’t fall or something stupid!” You quickly responded as you looked away, still upset that he had broken his promise with you and gotten hurt in the game. You couldn’t help the feeling of butterflies in your stomach though at the thought of you two being together without the team around. You had spent so much time together and yet, here you were, getting nervous at going with him to the hospital as he grabbed his bag and headed out with you at his heels.

-----------------

“Right this way Mr. Kiyoshi.” The nurse said, leading him to the back with you walking beside him quietly. The entire way there you were quiet, making Kiyoshi wonder if something was wrong.

“(Name) are you alright?” Teppei asked when you two were finally situated in a room to wait for the doctor.

“H-Hai, I’m fine!” You assured him with a smile though the look on his face told you he didn’t believe you.

“G-Gomenasai… (Name).” He said quietly, a light chuckle leaving his lips. “I know I promised I wouldn’t get hurt. I broke our promise.” He sighed heavily, finally looking over at you as you looked down, smiling sadly. You were hurt that he wasn’t able to keep his promise but you were glad that none of his injuries were life threatening or would prevent him from playing in upcoming games.

“I-It’s okay. I mean you’re still alive and able to play so I shouldn’t be mad!” You laughed quietly, trying to cheer him up the best you could even with tears stinging your eyes.

“I’ll make it up to you.” He vowed as he grinned to you as you nodded your head.

“I’ll hold you to it.” You agreed with a smile.

----------

After the doctors had finished treating Teppei’s wounds and the two of you were able to leave to head home, Kiyoshi had suggested going to get ice cream, something the two of you did often when you had free time and he didn’t have practice and you didn’t have to be home.

“Hmm…can I get a (favorite ice cream flavor)?” You asked the lady behind the counter as she smiled and nodded.

“Of course, coming right up!” She answered cheerfully as Teppei ordered his after she was finished and handing you your cone as she rang up the bill and he paid for both of you, a minor complaint leaving your lips at him always treating you to stuff.

“I told you I was going to make it up to you so I am.” He replied with a grin as you sat down at a table to enjoy the cold treat together with him. You couldn’t help but laugh softly at how odd he looked having bandages in so many different places yet none were touching. He had the appearance of a patched up doll and to your surprise he caught on to you quickly.

“What’s so funny? I can’t look that bad.” He pouted as he gave you a dazzling smile, one that always made your heart leap in your chest as you blushed and returned to eating your ice cream quietly, a small smile playing on your lips.

“It’s just…you look sort of funny with all those bandages of all different colors.” You joked, noticing that he had deliberately asked for different colors to make you smile, which you were grateful for.

“You look prettier when you smile.” He commented after a while of silence. “Promise me you’ll never stop smiling.” He requested, finishing off his cone a few minutes after you did.

“What a strange thing to request, Teppei… If it’s you I suppose I can promise that.” You answered with a smile.

“Then in return I’ll make sure you’re never sad. If anyone ever bullies you, picks on you, or says you are something you’re not, ignore them.” He told you “Because to me, you’re perfect and I wouldn’t have you any other way.” He grinned after his cheesy confession.

“A-Arigatou…” you blushed, looking down at your hands in your lap now in embarrassment as the male beside you laughed quietly.

“You’re too cute. I love you, (Name).” He said with a smile and a happy attitude.

“I love you, too.” You answered almost immediately, the two of you heading home soon after.

----------

Once you had arrived at your house, the male stopped at your door.

“Thanks again for accompanying me today.” Kiyoshi smiled at you.

“You’re welcome, Teppei…now go home and get some rest. You’re going to need it if you ever want those injuries to heal.” You chastised as you smiled and unlocked your door. Right before you could enter, however, Teppei had reached out, turning you back to face him before planting a kiss to you lips, something he didn’t do in public ever and rarely ever in private.

“I’ll see you tomorrow then?” He asked, just to make sure that you were still going to be there with him at the game tomorrow, even if he may not be able to play.

“Absolutely, Teppei. I’ll always be there to cheer you on. Unless you play against Kise, I can’t cheer against my own team ya know.” You teased as he laughed happily and nodded.

“Of course not, (Name), I’ll see you tomorrow.” He replied, turning to head down the steps of your porch to head towards his own house.

“Teppei!” You called out suddenly. “Great game!” You told him before quickly running inside, ignoring the pounding of your heart as he stood on your sidewalk with a smile on his face. With you in his heart and his mind he headed off towards home, his bruises completely forgotten and his worn out body now filled with new excitement for the days ahead when the two of you could be together again.
